School Curriculum

Our students are offered a rich curriculum with opportunities to excel in all areas. In addition to the six Key Learning Areas currently offered in all NSW schools, Catholic schools also provide the Key Learning Area of Religious Education. The seven Key Learning Areas are as follows:
• English
• Mathematics
• Religious Education
• Science and Technology
• Personal Development, Health and Physical Education
• Human Society and Its Environment
• Creative Arts

From 2014 NSW schools are beginning implementation of the National Curriculum with the subjects of English and Science. Maths and History will follow in 2015 and 2016.

At St Finbarr’s the daily curriculum is built around consistent Literacy and Numeracy practice with high expectations for and careful monitoring of student learning. Literacy and Numeracy are the core components of our program with connections made to all Key Learning Areas.

The Creative Arts

The Creative Arts program is a feature of the St Finbarr’s Curriculum. Specialist teachers and tutors provide an exciting program in Music, Drama, Dance and Visual Arts. Every child participates in the program which culminates in a whole school showcase in Spring. Students may also take part in the instrumental music program, offered on our site through Xavier Catholic College, and participate in the School Band.

Indigenous and Environmental Education

Our students have developed a warm and strong relationship with the local Arakwal community and our students demonstrate a deep respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures. We are extremely fortunate to share a beautiful and diverse local environment and care of this environment and its inhabitants is a feature of learning at St Finbarr’s

Support and Enrichment

St Finbarr’s has a rigorous program of enrichment and additional support to students with particular learning needs. These programs are managed by our Additional Needs Teacher and the Support Team. While classroom teachers manage and monitor the needs of all children in their class, this team provides a range of support options and assists with the monitoring of specific learning goals.

Sporting Program

Our approach to sports is a feature of the school; we successfully promote a ‘have a go’ philosophy, strong team work, high levels of participation and a commitment to building on fundamental skills. Our region of Catholic Schools provides a range of representative opportunities for our students.
